The Bearcreek Cemetery Project

Headstones on some graves have been damaged, fallen over, or are missing. Some graves have no identification. The fence around the cemetery is in need of repair, as cattle often get inside and leave their “mark” on gravesites. Headstones have been knocked over. The cemetery gates are old and deteriorated. Some visitors have trouble opening and shutting the gates, thus gates are left open or ajar.
The work needed to be done is obvious. We have begun mapping the cemetery, so that friends and relatives of the deceased will have an easier time finding grave sites. When the mapping is complete, we will begin an attempt to identify graves without markers.
Also planned is a “Bearcreek Cemetery” entrance sign, done in old style to match when the cemetery was started (early 1900s). We would like to put a covered sign board at the cemetery, to display the cemetery map, and to pay tribute to the miners buried there, including many who died in the Smith Mine disaster.
