Today.
Bearcreek has taken steps to be the proud community
the town’s founders envisioned. The Town Council, Bearcreek Woman’s
Club members, Bearcreek Fire Department volunteers and other contributing
citizens are seeing the fruits of their labors begin to blossom. Bearcreek
History.
The town
began as a mining camp in the early 1900s. By 1920, the population had
grown to several thousand. Then, in the 1970s, the number of residents
dipped to 31. But the 2000 census listed Bearcreek as the fastest growing
town in Montana. Historic
Preservation.
Only a few of the old business buildings and sites remain
from Bearcreek’s glory days. But restoration of Bearcreek’s
Town Hall, and upgrades to the town’s cemetery has begun. The
Smith Mine Disaster.
In February of 1943 at the Smith Mine, located just outside Bearcreek,
73 men lost their lives in Montana’s worst mine disaster. Friends
